O servant of Allah – know that this worldly life (Ad-Dunya) is a fleeting shade, a transient provision, and a path that ends abruptly. Allah, Elevated is He, said:
”Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children
like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and pleasure. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.” [Qur’an 57:20] And He said:
”The mutual rivalry for piling up (the good things of this world) diverts you, until you visit the graves (i.e., till you die).” [Qur’an 102:1-2]
Ibn Kathir – may Allah have mercy upon him – commented on this verse: ”You are distracted from the Hereafter by competing in the collection of worldly wealth, until you die and are buried in the graveyards. Then you will come to know the reality of what you neglected.”
