The Arabic word al-marʾah (woman) refers to the female counterpart of the male. It is pronounced imraʾah or marʾah. The term itself does not have a direct plural form; instead, the words nisāʾ or niswah are used. Woman is the noble creation whom Allāh—the Mighty and Sublime—brought into existence as a lifelong companion and partner for man.
She was originally created from man so that their bond would be deeper, their harmony more complete, and their closeness more profound. Through this creation, sincere affection and mercy were established between them, forming a relationship of mutual comfort, protection, and beauty—each being a garment for the other.
Allāh, the Exalted, says:
“O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and from them both He created many men and women. And fear Allāh through whom you demand your mutual rights, and do not sever the ties of kinship. Surely, Allāh is Ever an All-Watcher over you.”
