Beskrivning

Imām at-Tirmidhī was born during the caliphate of the ʿAbbāsid khalīfah al-Maʾmūn ʿAbdullāh ibn Hārūn ar-Rashīd, who initiated the fitnah regarding the claim that the Qurʾān was a creation of Allah and not His Speech.

During his lifetime, nine Muslim caliphs ruled—some were pious and noble, while others engaged in evil and innovation.

Imām at-Tirmidhī traveled extensively in his pursuit of knowledge, which granted him the expertise to become both a faqīh (jurist) and muḥaddith (hadith scholar) of his time. He narrated ḥadīth from scholars such as Imām al-Bukhārī and Imām Muslim. He was one of the outstanding students of Imām al-Bukhārī and also studied under Imām Muslim.

Though commonly associated with learning from the tradition of Imām Mālik, it should be noted that he did not study directly under him due to the difference in eras; rather, he studied Mālikī knowledge through Mālik’s followers and transmitters, to such an extent that he was regarded as deeply dedicated to the Mālikī legacy in ḥadīth.

Many scholars of the past have highly praised Imām at-Tirmidhī. His book al-Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī is one of the most invaluable collections of ḥadīth available to this day. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn al-Athīr stated in Jāmiʿ al-Uṣūl:

“His Ṣaḥīḥ is the best of books, the greatest of them in benefit, the best in organization, and the least in repetition.”

Imām at-Tirmidhī also attained high status in other branches of knowledge, including tafsīr, fiqh, and history.
