Commentary on the Creed of Imam at-Tahawi

The pious predecessors placed the utmost importance on preserving the pure Islamic creed (ʿaqīdah), both in theory and in practice, free from superstition, innovation, misinterpretation, and denial. They achieved this through teaching, writing, dialogue, and debate.

One of the most highly regarded works on this subject is The Creed of al-Ṭaḥāwī, authored by Imâm Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṭaḥāwī (d. 321 AH). Though concise, it is remarkably precise, setting out the fundamental principles of belief and addressing its most essential issues.

The celebrated commentary on this text by ʿAlī ibn Abī al-ʿIzz al-Dimashqī al-Ḥanafī (d. 792 AH) has likewise attained great prominence. His exposition is both comprehensive and accessible, faithfully presenting the creed of Ahl as-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah. Over the centuries it has become a cornerstone reference in works on ʿaqīdah and has received extensive endorsement from scholars and leaders of the Sunni tradition.
