Patience and Gratitude is an abridged translation of a renowned classical work that has long been widely read in the Arab world but has remained largely inaccessible to English-speaking readers. The book explores the concepts of sabr (patience and perseverance) and its counterpart, shukr (gratitude), presenting them in a practical manner that demonstrates how these essential spiritual qualities can be incorporated into everyday life.
Although written more than six centuries ago, the words of Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah remain profoundly relevant—perhaps even more so in the modern age.
Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (1292–1350 CE) was a distinguished Muslim scholar who lived in Damascus, Syria. He initially studied under his father, who served as the qayyim (attendant) of the al-Jawziyyah school, and later became one of the foremost students of the great scholar Ibn Taymiyyah. Ibn al-Qayyim authored and compiled numerous influential works, including the well-known Zād al-Maʿād (The Provision of the Hereafter). He was also a contemporary of several prominent scholars such as Ibn Kathir and Ibn Rajab.
